Feeding Baby

General Guidelines

  • Especially early on, don't let baby sleep through feeds

    • Try to feed every 2-3 hours

  • Cluster feeding, where the baby wants to eat more frequently, is normal. Please allow baby to feed during cluster feeds

  • Try to burp baby half way through the bottle, or before switching sides if breast feeding

  • A little spit up is okay

  • Most of the time, let your baby guide you on how much to feed.

Tips and Tricks

  • Always remember you can call your hospital, even after delivery, and ask to meet with the lactation nurse

  • Try a different hold

    • Football carry

    • Pillow hold

    • Cross the front hold

  • Make sure that as much of the areola is in babies mouth as possible. This will also help with nipple pain

  • Try a nipple shield for a better latch

  • Tickle babies feet or irritate baby gently to keep them awake during feeds

  • Make sure you are using both sides equally

Formula Feeding

  • Start slow, around 15 ml or 1/2 oz of formula per feeding.

  • You baby will soon want to increase the amount, usually to around 30 ml or 1 oz of formula per feed

  • Most spit up is normal, but if you see blood or projectile vomit, notify Dr. Munn

  • Generic baby formula is just as good as name brand!
